Over the past few years we have seen a powerful resurgence of moko. The choice to reconnect with this traditional artform has been a source of cultural empowerment for many Māori. Julie Paama Pengelly (Ngāi Te Rangi, Te Moutere o Matakana) is one of the first wāhine kai tā (tā moko artist) of this era. In this kōrero she speaks with Justine Murray (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi) about the re-emergence of moko and where it fits in the contemporary space for Māori.
The Moko Movement is part of our debut programme, Into the Night. Join us for a special night of celebrating local authors, storytellers and artists. Over one evening we will present a series of talks across multiple venues in Tauranga CBD. Venue hop or stay in one place; the choice is yours.
