180 years of the Treaty of Waitangi in Tauranga

1 April 2020 @ 1:15 pm - 2:00 pm

Presented by: Tauranga Historical Society

180 years ago, on 10 April 1840, one of the signings of the Treaty of Waitangi took place in Tauranga Moana.

The story of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Tauranga is a fascinating one… Not all of the local chiefs agreed to sign the Treaty; those who didn’t wanted to govern themselves, those who did were looking for protection against their enemies.

Join award-winning author Debbie McCauley as she talks us through the research for her book, ‘The Treaty of Waitangi in Tauranga: Te Tiriti o Waitangi ki Tauranga Moana’.

Show-and-tell talks with our Heritage Specialists – A regular chance to get a close look at items that are normally locked away and to hear entertaining and informative stories.

Free, no booking necessary. Gather in the Okahukura Room in Ngā Wāhi Rangahau: Research Collections on the first floor of Tauranga Library.
