Diverse Marks – An exhibition by Stitchbirds. Launches Friday 3rd October at 5.30pm.
Welcome to Diverse Marks – an exhibition by local creative stitch artists, Liz Wilson, Pauline Shilton, Jo Ann Ingram and Linda Inglis (more commonly known as Stitchbirds) and ceramic artist Anya Fischer, also from Tauranga.
These works invite the viewer to address the definition of a mark, how marks are made and the impact of making one’s own mark. Undoubtedly Covid-19 Lockdown has given us the opportunity to assess how we interpret a mark – whether standing alone or in a cluster.
Stitchbirds appreciate the opportunity to exhibit with Anya accepting our mediums have synergies as we all strive to create our own marks.
As in previous exhibitions, Stitchbirds present a collaborative work. Using our hands we ink marked calico to create a material for a journal cover. After dividing the fabric into quarters we had no restrictions. These covers explore our personal investigations to produce more than just a journal cover – we acknowledge the result wraps around and protects something we continue to create on the inside.
Diverse Marks reinforces how stitch can be accepted as an art medium, happily sitting alongside a variety of practices. This exhibition offers the whole community to engage with artisans who have a passion to share their diversities with and beyond the needle.
