Handel: Israel in Egypt

Israel in Egypt is one of George Frideric Handel’s most recognised oratorios, after Messiah, and it tells the dramatic biblical story of the Israelites’ escape from slavery in Egypt. After a series of ten plagues falls on Egypt, Pharaoh is persuaded to let the Israelites go. He agrees to let them depart, but changes his mind and pursues them. The Red Sea miraculously parts to let the Israelites cross in safety, but when the pursuing Egyptians try to cross, the waters cover them, and they are drowned.
Our Musical Director will be Nigel Williams, and we are pleased to welcome back Douglas Mews (organist) as accompanist. Guest soloists for this concert are Elizabeth Mandeno (soprano) and Jessica Wells (alto). Elizabeth Mandeno is a former Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artist with NZ Opera. She studied at the Wales International Academy of Voice, where she earned an MA with Distinction in Advanced Vocal Technique. She has performed as a soloist alongside Dame Felicity Lott and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and in 2019 she won the Lockwood New Zealand Aria. Jessica Wells sang in the New Zealand Youth Choir from 2000 until 2005, and has sung in the University Singers, New London Singers, University Cathedral Choir (Cape Town, South Africa), and Musica Sacra. She currently sings with Viva Voce, New Zealand Opera Chorus and Voices NZ.
Israel in Egypt is a substantial oratorio (although we will be presenting a slightly abridged version) in two parts, with a short interval between the two.

– Early bird tickets: $20, available from choir members until Monday 23rd September. If you don’t know a choir member, please feel free to email tgacivicchoir@gmail.com and we can arrange tickets for you.
– Online: $20 plus $2.20 booking fee.
– Door sales: available for $25 – cash only (no EFTPOS).
School children are free, but need a ticket (for seating purposes).
