Marilyn Muirhead has developed an original artistic style that incorporates acrylics, watercolours, pastels, textiles and embellishments. Over the years she has learnt a wide range of techniques, and now creates works of art that embraces her love of colour, texture and natural elements.
Her artistic practice explores a combination of contemporary mixed media and painting with a focus on texture and design. In every case where fabrics are incorporated into her art work Marilyn will start with either a black or white base fabric and then dependent upon the subject matter will apply dyes, paints and embellishments as her creativity dictates. As she creates, she lets the piece take her where it will. She allows her imagination to flow building up components layer by layer, often changing direction and intensity of engagement with the subject matter.
She has won national awards and her art pieces have been specially chosen for exhibitions (including Fine Arts) in New Zealand, Australia, France, Japan, USA and Canada. Her public appeal received recognition through the Viewer’s Choice Award for “Fallen Leaves” at the NZ Quilt Symposium in 2017. Marilyn dares to be different and is passionate about pushing the boundaries, her latest obsession is portraits.
Her art pieces have been published in several books and magazines internationally.
