The Prophet is a 2004 play by Māori playwright Hone Kouka, and is the third play in his Waiora trilogy of plays.
Five teenage cousins have returned to their ahi kaa on the East Coast of Aotearoa for their cousin Joshua’s hura kōhatu (headstone unveiling ceremony). Over the three days there, they are confronted by the responsibilities they now face as adults.
With a backdrop of basketball and cool urban sounds, The Prophet is a moving story of discovery, identity and acceptance.
Directed and designed by Jason Te Mete of Tuatara Collective, collaborating with a team of highly experienced kaiako from Te Wharekura o Mauao, The Prophet is part of the Creatives in Schools programme through the Ministry of Education.
