SUMMARY:Threads of Connection | Matariki Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Creative Bay of Plenty | Te Waka Auaha Toi\nThreads of Connection explores the visible and unseen ties that bind people\, stories\, and creative practice. Like woven threads\, these connections move between generations\, communities\, and the natural world. \nFeaturing Guest Artist Darcy Nicholas with new works\, alongside Que Bidois\, Arohanoa Mathews\, Garry Webber\, Alie Henderson\, and Alison Badger\, the exhibition reflects a bicultural exchange grounded in shared knowledge and creative dialogue. \nThreads appear in many forms: fibre and weaving in textiles; line and pattern carved into wood; gesture and layered surfaces in painting. Each carries memory\, process\, and meaning. \nTogether\, the works reveal creativity as fluid and interconnected. Like the winds of Ururangi that signal change and the Māori New Year\, each piece connects artist\, environment\, and community. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Mike Tate at Carlton Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Katikati Open-Air Art\nMike Tate will present an exhibition of his latest work at the Carlton Gallery in June 2026. \nHis practice continues to evolve from earlier native timber pieces into a distinctive style that still honours a wood-inspired aesthetic\, now reimagined with a contemporary twist. \nA long time photographer\, Mike draws on his extensive catalogue of images\, selecting favourite scenes and transforming them into intricate wooden artworks. Each piece is carefully constructed-cut into multiple components\, painted\, and reassembled – reminiscent of a complex jigsaw puzzle. The process is both meticulous and time-intensive\, often taking weeks to complete\, with final result only revealed once the last piece is placed. \nKnown for his bolds use of colour\, Mikes interpretations are often more vibrant than the original photographs\, bringing a heightened sense of life and energy to each work. \nBased on the Coromandel Peninsula\, his art reflects a deep connection cto the region\, particularly its Pohutukawa-lined coastlines\, beaches\, and native bush. \nMike spends much of his time exploring landscapes\, often combining this with conservation work through Thames Coast Kiwi Care. His journeys across the Peninsula continue to inspire a growing collection of imagery-far more than he has time to create-each piece a thoughtful and crafted reflection of place. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Coming Undone - Ceramics by Jo Harris
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nThis exhibition delves into the complex and often conflicting relationship between the inner psychological worlds of women and the roles that society continues to impose upon them. It examines how identity is shaped\, constrained\, and at times fractured by expectations that have been passed down through generations. \nUsing black clay as a primary medium\, the work gives physical form to emotional and psychological states that are often difficult to articulate. The material itself—earthy\, dense\, and unyielding—becomes a metaphor for both the weight of external pressures and the resilience required to endure them. Figurative forms emerge\, embodying tension\, vulnerability\, and strength\, capturing what it can feel like to navigate the space between who one is internally and who one is expected to be. \nThe exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how these pressures manifest in subtle and overt ways\, and how the inner psyche responds\, adapts\, or pushes back. While contexts may shift\, the underlying struggle for autonomy\, self-definition\, and emotional truth remains ongoing.\nJo Harris is an Auckland-based artist whose practice revolves around the theme of the authenticity of self and the masks we wear. A multimedia artist\, Jo employs a range of materials in her work\, including ceramics\, recycled\, and found objects\, creating pieces that transcend traditional mediums. \nJo’s work is deeply invested in the tension between public and private expressions of the human experience. Her art invites viewers to reflect on the masks they wear in their own lives. At the core of Jo’s artistic journey is a search for an authentic space for herself—an endeavour that resonates deeply within her work. It is her hope that through engaging with her art\, viewers will find a connection to their own sense of authenticity. In doing so\, they may gain insight into their personal journeys and reflect on the ways in which art can mirror and expand our understanding of the self. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Drift an Exhibition by Damien Kurth
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nA selection of Damien’s latest works. \nWorking mostly in oils\, Kurth creates incredibly detailed ‘trompe l’oeil’ works that feel like tricks of the eye. He paints everyday objects – a cut crystal glass\, an old jar\, a patterned tin – things we usually overlook as mundane. \nBy placing these objects centre stage\, with no clues about where they are or why they’re there\, their familiarity starts to fade. and they gain an element of mystery and intrigue. Kurth’s commonplace objects possess the ‘seemliness of the unfamiliar’ or ‘Jamais vu’ a term used to describe the experience of being unfamiliar with something that is very familiar. \nThe artist uses a traditional ground gesso\, building the painting’s surface slowly; each stroke of oil working with the other to create a harmonic whole. Delicately painted sheets of paper and masking tape subtly divide the picture plane\, creating a sense of depth\, while fluorescent pink post-it notes punctuate his compositions; drawing the viewer’s eye across the canvas\, achieving an overall sense of balance and harmony. \nDamien Kurth (b.1972 Stratford\, Aotearoa New Zealand) is a contemporary painter residing in the BOP. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from Otago Polytechnic. Kurth’s work is held in numerous collections in NZ Aotearoa and worldwide. He is the winner of the Otago Polytechnic Painting Award\, the Derivan Painting Award\, the Cleveland Art Awards (Highly Commended) and a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award. \nSponsored by Gate Pa New World. \nThis exhibition launch preview is Friday 5th June\, 5.30pm – 7pm at The Incubator Creative Hub\, The Historic Village\, 17th Ave\, Tauranga. Everyone is welcome. Licensed Bar available. \nOn display at The Incubator Gallery from 6th June to the 27th of June. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Tūrangawaewae - Bethlehem College Seniors Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nTūrangawaewae is one of the most well-known and powerful Māori concepts. Literally tūranga (standing place)\, waewae (feet)\, it is often translated as ‘a place to stand’. Tūrangawaewae are places where we feel especially empowered and connected. They are our foundation\, our place in the world\, our home. \nOur Year 11\, 12 and 13 Art students have explored the theme of identity through understanding their tūrangawaewae. Woven through the exhibition are the students’ visits to our school marae\, Te Wairoa\, their journey to Tauranga city\, Mount Maunganui beach\, their homes\, memories with whānau and friends\, and their Christian faith. \nThe students have explored a range of mediums including design\, photography\, painting and printmaking. We are incredibly proud of the mahi our students have produced. \nSponsored by Gate Pa New World. \nThis exhibition launch preview is Friday the 5th of June. 5.30pm to 7pm at The Incubator Creative Hub\, The Historic Village\, 17th Ave\, Tauranga. Everyone is welcome. \nOn display in The Peoples Gallery Toi Ka Rere from the 6th of June to the 27th June\, 10am to 3pm. \nFind out more

DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nPlay with texture\, explore your creativity and create a beautiful artwork in this vibrant and social Textured Art Painting workshop. \nIn this workshop you’ll explore textured painting\, a technique where paint is mixed and applied in thicker layers to create depth on the canvas. By the end of the session\, you’ll have your own textured artwork to take home. \nAll art materials and tools provided\, as well as a few snacks and nibble. BYO drink if you’d like🍷🍻 \nIt’s a vibrant and social evening — great to come with friends\, as a couple\, or even on your own if you feel like doing something creative after work. \nLaura is an Incubator resident artist in the Villa Studios – pop in and say hi! Deeply inspired by the ocean\, Laura’s work reflects the intricate beauty of coral formations and marine ecosystems. Using textured layers\, structural elements and resin\, she creates tactile pieces that evoke the depth and movement found beneath the water’s surface. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:The Feedback Lab
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nSTOP MARKING YOUR OWN HOMEWORK! \nIt’s time to unlock your creative noncritical voice. Introducing the Feedback Lab 2026/27 monthly sessions. \nThe Feedback Lab invites artists of many different disciplines and levels to connect\, explore\, and share information ideas and processes in a relaxed non-judgemental environment. \nLead by Carol Bisset\, the Feedback Lab provides a safe place in which to share fresh perspectives on your own and other artists work. Throughout the year there will be a select group of guest speakers who will introduce us to their unique journeys as practising artists. \n“I’m really pleased to hear the Feedback Lab might be returning. \nWhat made it different for me was the intentional focus on constructive dialogue. It created a space where artists could share work and receive considered feedback from fresh perspectives. That process encouraged deeper reflection and brought valuable analytical insight into my own practice. I especially appreciated the opportunity to connect with other artists in Tauranga Moana in a meaningful way; not just socially\, but through critical and creative exchange. \nCarol is an outstanding facilitator. She creates a respectful\, responsive environment where people feel safe to speak honestly. Her ability to guide discussion while allowing space for diverse viewpoints is a real strength. \nGrassroots\, inclusive initiatives like this are vital for sustaining a healthy and connected arts community. They make critical conversation accessible and strengthen relationships within the local creative sector. ” – Fiorella Silva Perez. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Matariki for Tamariki
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The New Zealand Dance Company and Baycourt Community and Arts Centre\nThe New Zealand Dance Company (NZDC) and Baycourt present Matariki for Tamariki\, a joyful celebration for tamariki of all ages (recommended 7 to 14 years). \nTogether\, whānau are invited to explore Matariki\, the nine whetū of the constellation\, and the stories they carry\, in a celebration of a season that brings all of Aotearoa together. Created by acclaimed Aotearoa artist and 2023 New Zealand Arts Laureate Sean MacDonald (Ngāti Kahungunu\, Ngāti Raukawa)\, the show follows a cheeky group of friends travelling across Aotearoa during the Matariki season. \nMoving through ngahere\, maunga and moana\, they encounter the natural world as it shifts and renews on an adventure filled with dance\, humour\, play and surprise. As the journey unfolds\, the nine whetū of Matariki emerge\, each with their own role to play. Waitī and Waitā move through freshwater and the sea\, Waipunarangi brings the rain\, and Ururangi stirs the winds. Pōhutukawa remembers those who have passed\, while Hiwa-i-te-Rangi looks ahead to hopes for the year to come. \nBlending storytelling\, music and dance\, Matariki for Tamariki balances high energy with poignant moments to keep tamariki engaged\, while offering plenty for parents\, caregivers and older audiences to enjoy. \nWith bold visual design by Rona Ngahuia Osborne and sound by Alistair Deverick\, Matariki for Tamariki is a warm show that brings people together and leaves the whole whānau feeling connected and ready for the year to come. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Full Moon Sound Bath
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Ruth Holden | The Sound Temple\nCome and unplug from the world in nature and receive\, be nurtured and feel connected. \nThis is a two hour sacred fire ceremony and sound bath with cacao. These circles are held in the Sound Temple and on the land surrounding\, we gather round the fire for a powerful intention setting and connection and prepare the participants for a deep sound journey.  Each event is individually curated\, making best use of the opportunity to work intentionally in flow with the planetary alignments and realize the incredible potential that comes with the various phases of the moon. \nAfter the fire ceremony we enjoy a high quality locally sourced cacao\, Essence cacao is a sacred elixir from Samoa that enriches the experience by aiding in expanding the heart chakra to create space for expansion and vulnerability. This medicine can help you journey into states of higher awareness and connect you to your inner desires. \nThe Sound Bath: after the cacao we settle in for a deeply nurturing and nourishing sound bath. This can consist of any of the following:  tuning forks\, essential oils\, medicine drum\, crystal bowls\, chimes\, shakers\, crystals and harp. Reiki may also be included. \nAfter the sound bath the circle is closed and our guests have the opportunity to drift off home or to stay and share. Those who stay will be invited to journal\, chat and have a sleepy tea together to unpack the experience. \nThe full moon brings a natural conclusion to past cycles and it is a time to let go of that which no longer serves. \nThe Sound Temple is a no phone zone. Enjoy the connection with others without digital distractions. \nFind out more
