Bay of Plenty Symphonia is delighted to announce the six young finalists who will perform with the Bay’s community orchestra in this year’s popular Rising Stars Concerto Competition. The finals concert, supported by the Creative Communities Scheme (Tauranga), will be held at Baycourt, 3.30 pm on 30th June. The contestants, 12-18 year old classical instrumental musicians from around the Bay of Plenty, relish the opportunity to perform solo with a live orchestra as well as the chance to be acclaimed as winner of the Rising Star title.
The finalists and their chosen pieces are:
- Hayden Butt (Tauranga) - Weber Clarinet Concerto No 2
- Huang Yu Li (Tauranga) - Mozart Piano Concerto No 9
- James Robinson (Tauranga) - Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto
- Leo Read (Taneatua) - David Trombone Concertino
- Rosa Hook (Rotorua) - Mendelssohn Violin Concerto
- Sumin Sarah Lee (Tauranga) - Mozart Violin Concerto No 3
The Symphonia’s Rising Stars concerts have taken place every 2 years since 2009 and have secured a special place in the calendars of the Bay’s classical music lovers, young musicians and their teachers. As a member of the audience said after 2017’s event, ‘What talented young musicians we have in the Bay. This is a fantastic service to the local music community!’. Many past contestants have gone on to pursue a career in music.
The concert will be conducted by Justus Rozemond and the prestigious judging panel will be headed by well known conductor and musicologist Dr Peter Walls. After the winner is announced, the afternoon will conclude with the presentation of prizes by the Mayor of Tauranga, Mr Greg Brownless. Tickets will be on sale soon.
