Cultural Connections is a council staff training package delivered by the Takawaenga Maori Unit. During Matariki we open this training to the public.
Join us to learn about our city and our region’s history, local iwi and hapū, and the cultural richness of our land. The course takes place over two days and is split into three modules: Module 1: past and present; Module 2: protocols; and Module 3: walking the land.
- Module 1 (day 1) gives participants a basic understanding and awareness of key historical and contemporary issues relating to our region.
- Module 2 (day 1) looks at the protocols, terminology and key concepts to successfully engage with iwi and hapu – something we do a lot of at Tauranga City Council. This includes identifying the iwi and hapu living in the TCC area.
- Module 3 (day 2) takes participants on a day-long tour of significant cultural sites across the city, allowing them to make linkages between our land and our people. This tour is usually guided by a local kaumatua who brings our local history to life by sharing his and his hapu’s own stories.
Numbers are limited, bookings are essential, attendance on both days is required.
