He Karere Tauira is a collection of works by four Maori artists: Erena Koopu, Cy McLeod, Te Haunui Tuna and Iata Peautolu.
These artists are all connected by Tauira mai Tawhiti kapa haka. This latest series of work celebrates and encompasses the tribal narratives of Te Whānau ā Apanui and is captured and created as a visual narrative also.
The art works in ‘He Karere Tauira’ is a translation of iwi histories and whakapapa through visual expression. The imagery portrayed in this exhibition are inspired by many of the compositions in Tauira mai Tawhiti kapa haka. These works also attempt to encapsulate the emotions of the composition when performed on the stage. The characteristics and imagery used in these works are unique to each artist’s style however, there is a similar binding narrative.
Erena, Cy, Haunui and Iata are influenced by their respective iwi and hapū, and have a deep understanding, knowledge and respect of all things Māori.
The stories, the people and history of Tauira mai Tawhiti kapa haka are kept alive and it’s the intention of these artists to share them with the world….He karere Tauira.
