One of Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s objectives is to encourage young classical musicians - both as performers on stage and in appreciating orchestral music.
As a community orchestra, the Symphonia dedicates one of its concerts each year to ‘youth music’. In 2019 it’s time for the Symphonia’s sixth Rising Stars Competition, and contestants need to get their applications ready now for this popular event.
The competitions are designed to give 12-18 year old musicians from the Bay of Plenty a platform to showcase their talent to the New Zealand public. This year there will be two classes: a concerto competition for instrumentalists and, for the first time, an aria competition for aspiring vocalists. Finalists will perform with the orchestra at a concert at Baycourt in September and the winners will be selected on the night by a panel of prestigious judges.
Over the years the Symphonia’s Rising Stars competitions have brought many oustanding young performers to the attention of local audiences, several going on to further their studies towards an exciting career in classical music.
Further details and entry forms for this year’s competitions are available from firstname.lastname@example.org or on the orchestra’s website, www.bopsymphonia.org.nz. Entries simply indicate an intention to participate in the competition, and no musical input is required at this stage – but those entries MUST be received by 22nd February 2019. So don’t delay!
