SUMMARY:Classical Titans
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Scholars Baroque Aotearoa\nThe Scholars Baroque\, along with renowned national soloists\, will perform the dramatic and moving Stabat Mater by Franz Josef Haydn. This is a stirring and deeply emotional work and\, next to his choral masterpiece The Creation\, is probably Haydn at his finest. \nImmerse yourself in the profound beauty of Haydn’s music\, which captures the sorrow and pathos of the Virgin Mary witnessing the crucifixion of her son. With its stunning melodies and rich harmonies\, this piece is not only a cornerstone of the classical choral repertoire but also a moving reflection on love and sacrifice. \nThe Scholars Baroque are also pleased to welcome Esha Xu\, winner of the Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s 2025 Rising Stars Concerto Competition\, performing Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 10 in C Major\, K330. Esha is a captivating and talented performer who enthralled audiences at the concerto competition last year\, and the Scholars are excited to share the concert stage with her in their first concert of 2026. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Thrill of Love
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: 16th Avenue Theatre\nThrill of Love is a serious play written by Amanda Whittington\, who has adapted the factual account of Ruth Ellis\, the last woman executed in Britain for the murder of her partner\, David Blakely. It examines Ruth’s life\, motivations\, and subsequent conviction. \nRuth is portrayed as a sophisticated\, intelligent\, and considerate individual employed at a gentleman’s club managed by Sylvia\, with colleagues Vickie and Doris. Her eloquence and education is evident\, as she regularly addresses grammatical inaccuracies\, which serves to underline the challenging social context of post-war Britain during the mid-1950s. \nThe play opens with Ruth committing the murder and providing a clear confession to Detective Inspector Gale. The narrative alternates between past and present as Gale investigates Ruth’s motives. Rather than focusing on ‘whodunit\,’ the central question explored is why-do-it! \nFind out more

SUMMARY:The Journey of Mataatua Whare & Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Opus Orchestra\nOpus Orchestra will present a powerful programme of orchestral and vocal music this May\, pairing a major New Zealand opera by Dame Gillian Karawe Whitehead with one of Beethoven’s most exhilarating works. \nAt the heart of the concerts is The Journey of Mataatua Whare\, a moving opera in concert that tells the true story of the great wharenui Mataatua\, built in Whakatāne in 1875 by Ngāti Awa. Taken overseas without consent\, the wharenui spent decades travelling the world before finally returning home in 2011. \nThrough Whitehead’s distinctive musical language\, the opera explores themes of history\, identity\, loss and return. The work is presented in concert form and brought to life by three outstanding emerging New Zealand singers: soprano Katherine Winitana\, baritone Tomairangi Henare\, and bass Samuel McKeever. Each singer represents a different perspective within the story — Te Ao Māori\, the Pākehā world\, and the voice of the wharenui itself — giving the opera strong dramatic focus and emotional depth. The Waikato University Voice Programme Ensemble will join Opus Orchestra for the performances. \nThe programme is completed by Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5\, the “Emperor” Concerto\, a work of heroic scale\, lyrical beauty and triumphant spirit. Celebrated New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge will appear as soloist\, bringing virtuosity and insight to this cornerstone of the concerto repertoire. \n“I am delighted to be making my debut with the orchestra of my ‘home’ region for this concert\,” says De Pledge. “The Emperor has long been a favourite concerto for me\, a magisterial and magical work that holds endless fascination. I’m looking forward to playing such a wonderful piece for audiences all over the region.” \nConducted by Peter Walls\, this concert brings together two contrasting yet complementary works to create a unique musical experience that reflects both local stories and universal human themes. \nProgramme:\nWhitehead: The Journey of Mataatua Whare\nBeethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” \nArtists:\nConductor – Peter Walls\nPiano Soloist – Stephen De Pledge\nSingers – Katherine Winitana (soprano)\, Tomairangi Henare (baritone)\, Samuel McKeever (bass-baritone)\nChorus – Waikato University Voice Programme Ensemble \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Uncharted Waters an Exhibition by Helen English
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nThis work is a continuation of work exploring figurative and marine themes. Helen is interested in preserving the natural environment and the discovery of our incredible world without leaving permanent marks. \nShe paints ethereal women as seekers — navigators of the natural world — who engage with their surroundings through intuition and curiosity\, with a respect and wonder for what they find. The fish and ocean creatures which Helen paints represent the beauty and variety of that world which we do not often see up close. \nWith a style that shifts between realism\, expressionism and abstraction\, Helen has a deep passion for colour and creating a mood. Her work consists of layers of water-based mediums and collage which\, after the curing process\, is glazed with oils to enhance depth \nBorn in the UK\, her early career in post-production opened the door to international opportunities\, eventually bringing her to Aotearoa. She had always made art but it took a while to make it a career. After spending years creating intermittently\, and gaining a teaching degree\, she finally created a studio space at home\, and her art practice became a regular pursuit. Her space is peaceful and perfect for creative inspiration. \nWhilst continuing to paint\, she completed a Master of Visual Arts Education at the University of Waikato and then furthered her art practice through training with the Milan Art Institute\, blending classical techniques with contemporary vision. \nSponsored by Gate Pa New World. \nThis exhibition launch preview is Friday 8th May\, 5.30pm – 7pm. On display from 9th May to 31st May. \nEveryone is welcome. Licensed Bar available. \nFind out more
