SUMMARY:Te Waka o Rangi: Stories Written in the Stars An Exhibition by Students of Northern Health School
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nWe are absolutely delighted to welcome Northern Health School as our feature exhibition in the Incubator Gallery this Matariki. \nTheir beautiful display explores Te Waka o Rangi and the many layers of meaning held within Matariki – stars\, stories\, and remembrance – brought to life through harakeke whetū and a striking manu tukutuku created by ākonga/students. \nAlongside this\, the exhibition shares the journey of “What’s in a Name?”\, where curiosity about the local street names ‘Harata Way’ and ‘Hoariri Way’ led ākonga to the rich local history of the Battle of Pukehinahina and the courage of Harata\, a young Ngāi Tamarāwaho wahine. This collaborative exhibition celebrates the creativity\, learning\, and connection of ākonga\, kaiako\, whānau\, and the wider community. \nOn display in The Incubator Gallery and Studios from the 4th of July to the 25th of July\, 10am – 3pm. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Mike Tate at Carlton Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Katikati Open-Air Art\nMike Tate will present an exhibition of his latest work at the Carlton Gallery in June 2026. \nHis practice continues to evolve from earlier native timber pieces into a distinctive style that still honours a wood-inspired aesthetic\, now reimagined with a contemporary twist. \nA long time photographer\, Mike draws on his extensive catalogue of images\, selecting favourite scenes and transforming them into intricate wooden artworks. Each piece is carefully constructed-cut into multiple components\, painted\, and reassembled – reminiscent of a complex jigsaw puzzle. The process is both meticulous and time-intensive\, often taking weeks to complete\, with final result only revealed once the last piece is placed. \nKnown for his bolds use of colour\, Mikes interpretations are often more vibrant than the original photographs\, bringing a heightened sense of life and energy to each work. \nBased on the Coromandel Peninsula\, his art reflects a deep connection cto the region\, particularly its Pohutukawa-lined coastlines\, beaches\, and native bush. \nMike spends much of his time exploring landscapes\, often combining this with conservation work through Thames Coast Kiwi Care. His journeys across the Peninsula continue to inspire a growing collection of imagery-far more than he has time to create-each piece a thoughtful and crafted reflection of place. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Tūrangawaewae - Bethlehem College Seniors Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nTūrangawaewae is one of the most well-known and powerful Māori concepts. Literally tūranga (standing place)\, waewae (feet)\, it is often translated as ‘a place to stand’. Tūrangawaewae are places where we feel especially empowered and connected. They are our foundation\, our place in the world\, our home. \nOur Year 11\, 12 and 13 Art students have explored the theme of identity through understanding their tūrangawaewae. Woven through the exhibition are the students’ visits to our school marae\, Te Wairoa\, their journey to Tauranga city\, Mount Maunganui beach\, their homes\, memories with whānau and friends\, and their Christian faith. \nThe students have explored a range of mediums including design\, photography\, painting and printmaking. We are incredibly proud of the mahi our students have produced. \nSponsored by Gate Pa New World. \nThis exhibition launch preview is Friday the 5th of June. 5.30pm to 7pm at The Incubator Creative Hub\, The Historic Village\, 17th Ave\, Tauranga. Everyone is welcome. \nOn display in The Peoples Gallery Toi Ka Rere from the 6th of June to the 27th June\, 10am to 3pm. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Drift an Exhibition by Damien Kurth
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nA selection of Damien’s latest works. \nWorking mostly in oils\, Kurth creates incredibly detailed ‘trompe l’oeil’ works that feel like tricks of the eye. He paints everyday objects – a cut crystal glass\, an old jar\, a patterned tin – things we usually overlook as mundane. \nBy placing these objects centre stage\, with no clues about where they are or why they’re there\, their familiarity starts to fade. and they gain an element of mystery and intrigue. Kurth’s commonplace objects possess the ‘seemliness of the unfamiliar’ or ‘Jamais vu’ a term used to describe the experience of being unfamiliar with something that is very familiar. \nThe artist uses a traditional ground gesso\, building the painting’s surface slowly; each stroke of oil working with the other to create a harmonic whole. Delicately painted sheets of paper and masking tape subtly divide the picture plane\, creating a sense of depth\, while fluorescent pink post-it notes punctuate his compositions; drawing the viewer’s eye across the canvas\, achieving an overall sense of balance and harmony. \nDamien Kurth (b.1972 Stratford\, Aotearoa New Zealand) is a contemporary painter residing in the BOP. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from Otago Polytechnic. Kurth’s work is held in numerous collections in NZ Aotearoa and worldwide. He is the winner of the Otago Polytechnic Painting Award\, the Derivan Painting Award\, the Cleveland Art Awards (Highly Commended) and a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award. \nSponsored by Gate Pa New World. \nThis exhibition launch preview is Friday 5th June\, 5.30pm – 7pm at The Incubator Creative Hub\, The Historic Village\, 17th Ave\, Tauranga. Everyone is welcome. Licensed Bar available. \nOn display at The Incubator Gallery from 6th June to the 27th of June. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Coming Undone - Ceramics by Jo Harris
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nThis exhibition delves into the complex and often conflicting relationship between the inner psychological worlds of women and the roles that society continues to impose upon them. It examines how identity is shaped\, constrained\, and at times fractured by expectations that have been passed down through generations. \nUsing black clay as a primary medium\, the work gives physical form to emotional and psychological states that are often difficult to articulate. The material itself—earthy\, dense\, and unyielding—becomes a metaphor for both the weight of external pressures and the resilience required to endure them. Figurative forms emerge\, embodying tension\, vulnerability\, and strength\, capturing what it can feel like to navigate the space between who one is internally and who one is expected to be. \nThe exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how these pressures manifest in subtle and overt ways\, and how the inner psyche responds\, adapts\, or pushes back. While contexts may shift\, the underlying struggle for autonomy\, self-definition\, and emotional truth remains ongoing.\nJo Harris is an Auckland-based artist whose practice revolves around the theme of the authenticity of self and the masks we wear. A multimedia artist\, Jo employs a range of materials in her work\, including ceramics\, recycled\, and found objects\, creating pieces that transcend traditional mediums. \nJo’s work is deeply invested in the tension between public and private expressions of the human experience. Her art invites viewers to reflect on the masks they wear in their own lives. At the core of Jo’s artistic journey is a search for an authentic space for herself—an endeavour that resonates deeply within her work. It is her hope that through engaging with her art\, viewers will find a connection to their own sense of authenticity. In doing so\, they may gain insight into their personal journeys and reflect on the ways in which art can mirror and expand our understanding of the self. \nFind out more

Woven through the exhibition are the students’ visits to our school marae\, Te Wairoa\, their journey to Tauranga city\, Mount Maunganui beach\, their homes\, memories with whānau and friends\, and their Christian faith. \nThe Incubator Gallery: Drift an Exhibition by Damien Kurth:\nOn the other end of the scale Damien holds a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from Otago Polytechnic. \nWorking mostly in oils\, Kurth creates incredibly detailed ‘trompe l’oeil’ works that feel like tricks of the eye. The commonplace objects he paints possess the ‘seemliness of the unfamiliar’ or ‘Jamais vu’ a term used to describe the experience of being unfamiliar with something that is very familiar. He builds the painting’s surface slowly; each stroke of oil working with the other to create a harmonic whole. \nThe Pot House Gallery: Coming Undone – by Jo Harris:\nJo Harris is an Auckland-based ceramic artist whose practice revolves around the theme of the authenticity of self and the masks we wear. This exhibition delves into the complex and often conflicting relationship between the inner psychological worlds of women and the roles that society continues to impose upon them. Using black clay as a primary medium\, the work gives physical form to emotional and psychological states that are often difficult to articulate. \nImprint Gallery:\nThe Cube Gallery – perfectly proportioned and run by a trio of printmaker studio artists. Always an Intimate but powerful pocket-sized punch! \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Threads of Connection | Matariki Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Creative Bay of Plenty | Te Waka Auaha Toi\nThreads of Connection explores the visible and unseen ties that bind people\, stories\, and creative practice. Like woven threads\, these connections move between generations\, communities\, and the natural world. \nFeaturing Guest Artist Darcy Nicholas with new works\, alongside Que Bidois\, Arohanoa Mathews\, Garry Webber\, Alie Henderson\, and Alison Badger\, the exhibition reflects a bicultural exchange grounded in shared knowledge and creative dialogue. \nThreads appear in many forms: fibre and weaving in textiles; line and pattern carved into wood; gesture and layered surfaces in painting. Each carries memory\, process\, and meaning. \nTogether\, the works reveal creativity as fluid and interconnected. Like the winds of Ururangi that signal change and the Māori New Year\, each piece connects artist\, environment\, and community. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Uncharted Waters an Exhibition by Helen English
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: The Incubator Creative Hub\nThis work is a continuation of work exploring figurative and marine themes. Helen is interested in preserving the natural environment and the discovery of our incredible world without leaving permanent marks. \nShe paints ethereal women as seekers — navigators of the natural world — who engage with their surroundings through intuition and curiosity\, with a respect and wonder for what they find. The fish and ocean creatures which Helen paints represent the beauty and variety of that world which we do not often see up close. \nWith a style that shifts between realism\, expressionism and abstraction\, Helen has a deep passion for colour and creating a mood. Her work consists of layers of water-based mediums and collage which\, after the curing process\, is glazed with oils to enhance depth \nBorn in the UK\, her early career in post-production opened the door to international opportunities\, eventually bringing her to Aotearoa. She had always made art but it took a while to make it a career. After spending years creating intermittently\, and gaining a teaching degree\, she finally created a studio space at home\, and her art practice became a regular pursuit. Her space is peaceful and perfect for creative inspiration. \nWhilst continuing to paint\, she completed a Master of Visual Arts Education at the University of Waikato and then furthered her art practice through training with the Milan Art Institute\, blending classical techniques with contemporary vision. \nSponsored by Gate Pa New World. \nThis exhibition launch preview is Friday 8th May\, 5.30pm – 7pm. On display from 9th May to 31st May. \nEveryone is welcome. Licensed Bar available. \nFind out more
