Why? Because Arts and Culture Matters!

What does art and culture contribute to a city?

Arts and Culture is intrinsic to Tauranga’s journey towards becoming an internationally competitive city.

Rapid growth and engaging in a ‘global war for talent’ has put pressure on both individuals and organisations.

We can look at contribution in two ways, economically and socially.

Economically, the ‘creative economy’, contributes around $46 million in GDP annually to the Western Bay sub- region. Think from small grass roots community events, gallery sales or big ticket tours. Each plays their part. Nurturing this creative economy to grow, is critical to a prosperous region. On this same note, the Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty District Council’ are looking at how we shape the next ten years. We have some ambitious goals. And we are going to need some serious people power to get them across the line. The phrase ‘global talent war’ is very real. Creative people and brilliant minds want to live in areas that reflect their own ethos. Arts and culture will be what puts our region on the map as a confident and emerging world-class city with a reputation for diversity, energy and creativity.

The social contribution of arts and culture is profound - how long is a piece of string. As an industry, we constantly have an uphill battle when we discuss the value of the arts. A creative ecosystem is one with people at the centre. Connection is at the heart of this. Along with a myriad of social outcomes (which you can read more about in our Arts and Culture strategy), arts and cultures drives a sense of inclusivity, identity, innovation and the development of a shared history.
