Our goal is to create a stimulating environment that reflects and enhances the local area’s heritage, diversity and character through public artworks integrated in the architecture, infrastructure and landscape.

We plan and develop public art projects, seek funding from grants and the local community for these projects, and then work with Western Bay of Plenty District Council (WBOPDC) and the local hapū, Pirirākau, to manage their implementation, on a partnership basis where appropriate.

The group was established in January 2010, and to date we have initiated several major projects: The wrought iron panels at Western Ave, the anchor stone, He Punga, at the Ōmokoroa Domain, a mural on the changing sheds at the Ōmokoroa Domain, and a kinetic sculpture of godwits – Kuaka –installed at Cooney Reserve. And we have begun planning a third project for the new library building.

We all volunteer our time to the group. Some group members have skills as artists – our group includes painters, a sculptor and a potter. Other group members have an interest in the arts more broadly, and in the development of the Ōmokoroa community. We are actively seeking ways to create greater engagement with the local community, and hope to develop a network of support to complement the work of this steering group.

We apply for community grants, including funding from Western Bay of Plenty District Council and the Ōmokoroa Community Board, and seek sponsorship (in money and kind) from the local community to support the art projects.
