SUMMARY:The Caretaker's Guide to the Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Opus Orchestra\nThese school holidays\, Opus Orchestra\, led by conductor Adam Maha and local legend Jeremy Hantler\, invites tamariki and their whanau into a world where orchestral music becomes a playground. \nAt the heart of this family concert tour is The Caretaker’s Guide to the Orchestra by Jeremy Holland-Smith\, with a witty\, warm script by celebrated English illustrator and children’s author James Mayhew. Brought to life by Tauranga local Jeremy Hantler (frontman of the Harmonic Resonators) assuming the role of the Caretaker\, this imaginative work\, never before performed in New Zealand\, introduces the instruments of the orchestra through storytelling\, humour and gentle mischief\, with moments of silliness and surprise\, and children are encouraged to listen\, laugh and lean in. \nThe second part of the programme continues the journey\, with our narrator Jeremy guiding both orchestra and audience through a series of shorter works from around the globe creating a musical passport for curious ears. Kids (and kids at heart) will be invited to sing along\, move their bodies and marvel at the virtuosity of Opus Orchestra concertmaster Lara Hall stepping into the spotlight as soloist. \nTrue to Opus Orchestra family concert tradition\, the adventure doesn’t end with the final note. Children will be invited to “storm the stage”\, meet the musicians and explore the instruments up close. \nFULL PROGRAMME:\nHOLLAND-SMITH: The Caretaker’s Guide to the Orchestra\nGRIEG: “Morning” from Peer Gynt Suite No. 1\nSTRAUSS II (arr): Unter Donner und Blitz\nDEBUSSY: En bateau\nSARASATE: Introduction and Tarantelle (violin solo: Lara Hall)\nCOPLAND: Hoedown from Rodeo\nTRAD (arr): New Zealand Waiata \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Beethoven Unwrapped!
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Opus Orchestra\nLet Opus Orchestra take you on a journey of discovery into one of the real gems of Beethoven’s works. With guest conductor Michael Joel as your musical guide\, Beethoven Unwrapped! invites audiences to experience Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in a way they’ve never heard before. \nIn a new concept developed by Opus Orchestra in 2025\, Michael and the orchestra will “unwrap” the music in the first half of the concert—bringing out key themes\, rhythms\, and harmonies\, and sharing insights into Beethoven’s ideas and emotions through the music itself. This is not a lecture\, but an invitation: an open\, playful\, and informal way to get closer to Beethoven’s genius. After a break with the chance to chat to the musicians\, the orchestra returns to perform the entire symphony in full. With new understanding and familiarity\, the second half becomes an unforgettable listening experience. \nKnown for his energy and ability to connect with audiences\, Hamilton-based conductor Michael Joel has stood on the Opus Orchestra podium twice before in much-loved performances of Hairy Maclary’s Greatest Hits and Carnival of the Animals. He has also been leading the orchestra’s community outreach work to local libraries for 2 years. Michael is passionate about making orchestral music accessible\, exciting and fun for all. \nWhether you’re stepping into an orchestral concert for the very first time or you’re a lifelong Beethoven fan\, Beethoven Unwrapped! is designed to welcome everyone. \nFind out more
