We need accurate numbers for the venue\, so please only secure your spot if you are planning to be there.Supported by The Acorn Foundation 2026 Local Impact Funding. \nKia ora! The After Hours Book Club is a free\, open-door evening space for adult readers of all kinds right here in Waihī Beach. \nWhether you read one book a year or one a week\, whether it’s a library borrow\, an audiobook\, a Kindle\, a dog-eared paperback\, or fanfiction at midnight\, you belong here. There are no rules about what counts as reading\, and no judgement about what you love. \nOur first two sessions have honestly been such lovely nights\, full of easy conversation\, new friendships\, and far too many book recommendations to keep track of. If you haven’t made it along yet\, this is a great month to start. \nThis month\, we’re leaning into a Mystery & Thriller theme. That’s just a loose flavour for the evening’s prompts and activities\, not a reading requirement. You don’t need to have read a single whodunnit\, watched a crime drama\, or even like the genre to join in. Come as you are\, and the conversation will do the rest. \nOur third session is Wednesday 19th August\, 6pm to 7:30pm at Flatwhite. The kitchen and bar will be open on the night\, so come hungry (and thirsty)\, and help us support this wonderful local spot that has so generously offered their space for free. \nHow the evening works: \n6:00pm – Doors open. Grab a drink\, find a table\, and settle in. The table you choose will be your group for the evening\, giving you a small\, friendly circle of people to really get to know rather than getting lost in a big crowd. \n6:15pm – A quick welcome. \n6:20pm – Self-led activities and conversation at your table. No pressure\, no performing\, just good books and good company. \n7:15pm – A short wrap up from the events team. From there\, feel free to stay and keep chatting\, or quietly make your way home. \nThe After Hours Book Club was created because books have a way of getting us through the hard times. This is a space to celebrate that\, to connect with other likeminded people\, and to discover your next favourite read. \nCome in your PJs\, your finery\, your trackies\, whatever feels comfortable. The Op Shop Ball is one of them. It’s a beloved Waihī Beach tradition that locals have been asking about ever since the last one\, and one that is long overdue its return. \nIn 1977\, the legendary Studio 54 opened its doors in New York City and became the beating heart of the disco era. Frequented by icons such as David Bowie\, Mick Jagger\, Andy Warhol\, Grace Jones and Diana Ross\, it was the place to be. The dance floor pulsed with sequins\, satin\, and the kind of glamour that’s hard to describe and impossible to forget. Massive light installations\, costumed dancers\, and a crowd where celebrities rubbed shoulders with absolutely everyone. \nOutside\, people queued for hours just to get in. Inside\, nobody wanted to leave. \nIt was excessive\, electric\, and by all accounts\, absolutely brilliant. \nThis July\, this is the inspiration behind the highly anticipated return of the Waihī Beach Op Shop Ball\, Studio 64 (do you get it\, a clever play on words with +64 being the international calling code for NZ). \nDress the era: We’d love to see you raid a local op shop for your outfit\, after all\, putting together your look is half the fun\, and the creativity on display never disappoints. But whether you go full second-hand or simply dress the era\, come ready to commit to the theme. \nGet creative\, think outside the square and show off what you’ve put together. \nThe night: Doors open at 7pm\, and we start with the irresistible grooves of local funk favourites Disco Bush. Next DJ Dave takes over\, spinning back to back bangers to keep the dance floor alive all the way through to midnight. \nFood is included in your ticket and drinks available at the bar. This is a proper night out that you’ll be talking about for years to come. \nPlease note that for GA\, there is no set seating/tables. There will be a few tables and bar leaners throughout the hall. For guaranteed seating\, you will need a VIP table. \nVIP tables are available at $1\,000 for a table of eight. There will be champagne for the table\, food brought to your table throughout the night\, and the best seats in the room. These are limited and tables will go quickly. \nEvery ticket sold goes directly back into community initiatives here at Waihī Beach.
