SUMMARY:Come From Away – The Smash-Hit Musical
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Tauranga Musical Theatre\nExperience the global phenomenon that has captured hearts around the world. \nCome From Away is based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander\, Newfoundland\, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover\, when 38 planes\, carrying thousands of people from around the globe\, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11\, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers\, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music\, an open bar and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family. \nSet to a vibrant Celtic-influenced score\, this award-winning musical takes audiences on an emotional\, exhilarating journey as an extraordinary true event unfolds through the eyes of ordinary people. What begins as a moment of international crisis becomes an inspiring tale of kindness\, humanity\, and the power of community. \nAfter its world premiere in 2015\, Come From Away made its Broadway debut in 2017\, earning critical acclaim and becoming one of Broadway’s most celebrated hits of the decade. It went on to play more than 1\,600 performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and received a Tony Award\, six Olivier Awards\, and widespread international praise for its innovative storytelling and powerful message of unity. The show’s global presence resonates across all audiences as an uplifting reminder of humanity’s ability to come together\, no matter what the circumstances. \nJoin the thousands who have fallen in love with this extraordinary musical. Book your seats now and be part of the story that reminds us: even in the worst of times\, we see the best of humankind. \nOn Tuesday 28 April it’s Pay What You Can\, where you can choose your price to suit your budget.  \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Resurgence
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: New Zealand Symphony Orchestra\nMusic Director Emeritus James Judd and the NZSO perform a concert of well loved classics and a world premiere from Aotearoa New Zealand composer Anthony Ritchie. \nAnthony Ritchie World Premiere\nTchaikovsky Symphony No. 2 \nJessie Montgomery Strum\nBeethoven Symphony No. 7 \nMusic Director Emeritus James Judd and the NZSO perform three works that were well loved from their first performance\, and one new work that is sure to enjoy the same acclaim. \nBeethoven’s Seventh Symphony premiered to wildly ecstatic applause\, and its famous Allegretto funeral march was immediately encored. Tchaikovsky likewise enjoyed a rapturous reception for his Second Symphony. This symphony\, sometimes nicknamed Little Russian\, should really be nicknamed his Ukrainian Symphony\, given its loving use of Ukrainian folk tunes. Similarly\, New Yorker Jessie Montgomery alludes to folk and popular music in her work Strum — specifically Appalachian fiddle music and jazz — resulting in a piece that\, the composer writes\, “transforms into ecstatic celebration”. \nWe complete this exuberant programme with a new commission from Kiwi composer Anthony Ritchie\, who will undoubtedly add another musical gem to this concert of favourites. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:The Journey of Mataatua Whare & Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Opus Orchestra\nOpus Orchestra will present a powerful programme of orchestral and vocal music this May\, pairing a major New Zealand opera by Dame Gillian Karawe Whitehead with one of Beethoven’s most exhilarating works. \nAt the heart of the concerts is The Journey of Mataatua Whare\, a moving opera in concert that tells the true story of the great wharenui Mataatua\, built in Whakatāne in 1875 by Ngāti Awa. Taken overseas without consent\, the wharenui spent decades travelling the world before finally returning home in 2011. \nThrough Whitehead’s distinctive musical language\, the opera explores themes of history\, identity\, loss and return. The work is presented in concert form and brought to life by three outstanding emerging New Zealand singers: soprano Katherine Winitana\, baritone Tomairangi Henare\, and bass Samuel McKeever. Each singer represents a different perspective within the story — Te Ao Māori\, the Pākehā world\, and the voice of the wharenui itself — giving the opera strong dramatic focus and emotional depth. The Waikato University Voice Programme Ensemble will join Opus Orchestra for the performances. \nThe programme is completed by Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5\, the “Emperor” Concerto\, a work of heroic scale\, lyrical beauty and triumphant spirit. Celebrated New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge will appear as soloist\, bringing virtuosity and insight to this cornerstone of the concerto repertoire. \n“I am delighted to be making my debut with the orchestra of my ‘home’ region for this concert\,” says De Pledge. “The Emperor has long been a favourite concerto for me\, a magisterial and magical work that holds endless fascination. I’m looking forward to playing such a wonderful piece for audiences all over the region.” \nConducted by Peter Walls\, this concert brings together two contrasting yet complementary works to create a unique musical experience that reflects both local stories and universal human themes. \nProgramme:\nWhitehead: The Journey of Mataatua Whare\nBeethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” \nArtists:\nConductor – Peter Walls\nPiano Soloist – Stephen De Pledge\nSingers – Katherine Winitana (soprano)\, Tomairangi Henare (baritone)\, Samuel McKeever (bass-baritone)\nChorus – Waikato University Voice Programme Ensemble \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Urzila Carlson - Fatty On a Yacht
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Live Nation\nUrzila Carlson\, Aotearoa’s fan-favourite comedian\, returns to Tauranga in 2026 with even more understated punchlines and her signature deadpan delivery in the brand-new show\, Fatty On a Yacht. \nEver felt like you don’t belong? Like everyone else got the memo — and you turned up in the wrong outfit\, on the wrong day\, on the wrong yacht? \nCarlson’s new show\, Fatty On a Yacht\, is for anyone who’s ever tried to squeeze into a space — physical or social — and thought\, “This can’t be right”. \nIt’s about not fitting in\, standing out\, and laughing about it anyway. \nEffortlessly likeable… stream of belly-laughs. – The Age\, Melbourne. \nCarlson’s a master of the form. Audiences across New Zealand have known it for years and turned out in droves in recognition of that. Now\, it’s the world’s turn. – The Spinoff NZ. \nFind out more
