SUMMARY:Sunday Screenings: Breaking the Mould and Good Kunst
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Little Big Events\nJoin us in the Venetta Miles Vault for the continuous loop screening of two short documentaries\, Breaking the Mould (2024) and Good Kunst (2024) — both approximately 15 minutes — created and produced by Daughter Productions’ Phillida Perry. \nScreenings will take place on the first Sunday of each month from Jul–Oct\, 1–3pm. You’re welcome to drop in at anytime\, with no booking or registration required: \n\nSunday 5 July 2026\, 1–3pm\nSunday 2 August 2026\, 1–3pm\nSunday 6 September 2026\, 1–3pm\nSunday 4 October 2026\, 1–3pm\n\nBreaking the Mould\nA visceral glimpse into the life and work of acclaimed New Zealand sculptor Jaime Jenkins\, Breaking the Mould\, focuses on how Jenkin’s unconventional upbringing combines with the elements to inform her ceramic explorations. \nCurrently on view in the Long Gallery\, Jaime Jenkins’ Almost Touching is the artist’s first solo public gallery exhibition. Presented for the first time in her hometown of Tauranga Moana\, the exhibition brings together recent and new works that explore the organic\, intricate\, and architectural forms of the natural environment. \nAlmost Touching has been developed in partnership with The Dowse Art Museum. Curated by Karl Chitham (Ngāpuhi)\, it will show at the Dowse in 2027. \nGood Kunst\nProducer and film-maker\, Phillida Perry\, follows an all-women kiwi art-buying group operating under the moniker The Kunst Collective find their thirteen-year bonds under threat when they bring their collection to auction. \nIn conversation with the exhibition Private View — a collaboration with Toi Tauranga Art Gallery and Kathrine McDonald Design in The Pitau Gallery — the film and exhibition opens the door into the world of art collectors and significant works across Aotearoa. Hung in clusters above dining tables and placed at the heart of living rooms\, these artworks carry the stories of their makers and their collectors. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Visual Music and Mark Making
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Toi Tauranga Art Gallery\nSquiggla returns to Toi Tauranga Art Gallery on Sat 3 Oct 2026\, for 2 x Visual Music and Mark Making workshops. We invite you to explore visual music — making sense of the senses through responsive mark making in harmony with music. \n“Music is not limited to the world of sound. There exists a music of the visual world.” — Oskar Fischinger. \nChoose from one of the two sessions below:\nSat 3 Oct 2026\, 10.30am–12pm\nSat 3 Oct 2026\, 1pm–2.30pm \nNo previous experience required. Suitable for all ages but children under 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Ticket prices include all materials. \nThe idea of visual music is important for Squiggla because it offers a shared framework for thinking about mark making beyond representation. Just as music is built from sound rather than images\, Squiggla invites us to work with marks as material in their own right. Think of your mark-making tools as instruments in an orchestra. Respond to the music you hear\, composing and performing in real time\, with an eye and ear for pattern\, synchronisation\, rhythm\, tone\, variation and play. \nIt’s Squiggla time! See you there. \nFind out more

SUMMARY:Claudia Jarman Memorial Lecture 2026
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Toi Tauranga Art Gallery\nWe are excited to announce the free annual ‘Claudia Jarman Memorial Lecture’ for 2026\, on Tue 29 Sep\, 5.30–7.30pm. With the generous support from the Claudia Jarman fund\, Claire Regnault presents ‘Fashioning the Modern Woman’. \nThis lecture is FREE but registrations are required. \nClaire Regnault is an award-winning author who specialises in the history of dress in Aotearoa New Zealand. She is particularly interested in what the history of dress can tell us about women’s lives\, both real and ideal. \nShe also happens to be the Exhibition and Programmes Manager at Tauranga Museum and an Honorary Research Associate at Te Papa\, where she worked as a senior curator in the History Department for fifteen years. \nClaire is currently working on a new research project with Lizzie Bisley\, Stephanie Gibson and Chanel Clarke on  ‘Fashioning the Modern Woman: 1920 to 1949’\, which explores the lives of women during this dynamic period through a combination of art\, design and dress. \nIn this illustrated talk she will give an overview of the project and then using the 1940 New Zealand Centennial Exhibition — which attracted a phenomenal audience of 2\,641\,043 people – as a springboard explore a range of modern women’s lives\, including that of  Mollie Rodie\, a journalist\, fashion illustrator and costume designer\, fashion promoter Ina Allan\, dare devil motorcyclists Pat ‘Crash’ Gamble and Moy Wong\, and Miriama Heketa\, a much admired dancer who was famously sculptured by Margaret Butler. \nClaudia Jarman (1908–1986) was a passionate art educator who inspired two generations of young people in Tauranga Moana to practise\, appreciate and\, as one former student recalled\, “to see” art and design. Teaching at Tauranga District High School and later Tauranga Girls’ College\, Claudia was also an active contributor to the city’s cultural life and a founding member of both the Tauranga Chamber Music Society and Tauranga Art Society. \nThe ‘Claudia Jarman Memorial Lecture’ was established by former student Patricia Brooks to honour Claudia’s significant contribution to her students and the arts in Tauranga. Through an annual lecture by a visiting artist or art historian\, it continues her legacy of inspiring curiosity\, creativity and appreciation for the visual arts. \nImage: Mollie Rodie\, 1937\, Wellington\, by Spencer Digby Studios.
