Local Talent at Escape!

Plenty of local talent is taking the stage alongside out-of-town guests at this month’s Escape! festival.

Paul Cumming offers a multimedia presentation about the birds you’re likely to come across in the Western Bay at 12.30pm on Saturday, Oct 17. Being able to identify birds by their call is a good way to know what’s around as many birds are heard and not seen.

Dr Kura Paul-Burke (Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Whakahemo, Ngāti Mākino), a Waikato University marine scientist from Pāpāmoa, will appear with award-winning science communicator Shaun Hendy at 2pm on Saturday, Oct 17.

Sunday, Oct 18 kicks off at 9.30am with a full local line-up – GP Andrew Corin, hospital chaplain Matiu Best and former funeral director Greg Brownless spark up the conversation about dying that we all need to have.

It’s been a heck of a year (so far) and among those looking at the lessons we might have (should have?) learned at 12.30pm on Sunday, Oct 18 is small-town champion Karen Summerhays, joining Rod Oram, Te Radar, Shaun Hendy, Annette Lees and Tina Shaw.

Love books? Then Love Letters at 2pm on Sunday, Oct 18 will be for you. Sharing the impact books and writers have had on them are Tauranga librarian and publisher Debbie McCauley, short story writer and GP Dr Andrew Corin and HJL partner and Tauranga Arts Festival chair Kathryn Lellman. Also appearing are novelists Brannavan Gnanalingam and Nikki Crutchley and business commentator Rod Oram.

Saturday’s programme is at Waikato University (Tauranga) and Sunday’s at Baycourt, both in Durham Street. See the full programme at taurangafestival.co.nz.

Tickets, including day passes and student discounts, from the website of Baycourt.
