Back to Black | Jacki Barklie

Jacki Barklie, artist and Creative Director of Tauranga’s newest working art studio Back Studio, is set to showcase her new body of work from 7 – 28 January 2022, titled ‘Back to Black’. The exhibition will be held at Back Studio in Tauriko, featuring large and small scale works available for purchase. The Vernissage will be held on 7 January 2022 from 6.30pm until late, with drinks and catering to compliment the theme of the evening: black.

Barklie’s latest body of work is a visual commentary on the significance of the unsaid when communicating with others. To the artist, it is often the things not said that speak the loudest. In this body of work, minimalism exudes allowing the audiences attention to focus on tactility, scents, tastes and sounds, while colour takes a backseat. Form, light, reflection and shadow are explored in ‘Back to Black’.

It is the human psyche and the way people connect with each other and their spaces that has sustained Jacki Barklie’s love for making art for more than 30 years. Jacki’s experiences with people inspire much of her creativity, often drawn from her exposure to culture and colourful upbringing in Africa.

Jacki’s fulfilling 37-year career in the creative industry of hairdressing came to a happy ending when she delved into a Bachelor Degree in Creative Industries, focusing on Visual Arts, Printing and Photography. Immersed in a learning environment, Jacki was able to deepen her introspective lens, and from there she grew an insatiable curiosity for experimentation with mixed media, materials, canvas and methods.

Jacki has exhibited her works nationally and internationally.

Back Studio was born with the intention to build bridges between highbrow art and emerging artists, providing a space for creatives to share, collaborate and hold workshops. A space where artists support artists.
