Vacancy: Director – Tauranga Art Gallery

Tauranga Art Gallery is one of New Zealand’s newest and most respected regional public galleries. Since opening in 2007 it has consistently delivered high quality, diverse and exceptional visual art experiences that engage, inspire, challenge and educate.

The gallery’s exhibitions, events and programmes attract more than 40,000 visitors annually and in partnership with other galleries, Tauranga staff curate and have undertaken touring programmes throughout New Zealand and to key locations in Australia.

The art gallery is owned and managed by the Tauranga Art Gallery Trust and the Board is seeking to appoint a new Director to drive the overall creative vision for the gallery and ensure an entrepreneurial cost effective operation and proactive team culture.

The Board is seeking an experienced and successful arts professional with a demonstrated track record of leading and inspiring a highly motivated team to deliver dynamic art exhibitions, education and public programmes. Key attributes required are:

  • A post graduate qualification in art history, fine arts or arts management or relevant discipline
  • Successful track record of management within an arts institution, with curatorial expertise or other relevant skill sets and with networks in New Zealand, across the Asia Pacific region or further afield
  • Innovation, commercial astuteness and the ability and confidence to attract investment and support from a variety of stakeholders
  • The capability and experience to develop and nurture key strategic relationships with a range of stakeholders including the community, mana whenua, local and central government, business, arts, tourism and educational institutions and entities.
