Let Your Spirit Fly: Opus Orchestra

Opus Orchestra with the Hamilton Civic Choir celebrates the promise of Easter.

Music Director Peter Walls reveals his thinking in creating the special program for the Orchestra’s first concert series in 2023.

“This beautiful programme is made up of masterpieces written by composers who were inspired by the Easter story.”

Opus Orchestra will collaborate with the Hamilton Civic Choir in Vaughan William’s deeply moving Mystical Songs. The programme includes the premiere of Waikato composer David Griffith’s Parable of the Vineyard. In this, and in the Vaughan Williams, the soloist is Tauranga-based baritone, Chalium Poppy. Our concert opens with Haydn’s reflection on Christ’s final words from the cross and his dramatic evocation of the earthquake that followed his death. The performance will end with Mozart’s “Prague” Symphony written at the same time as Don Giovanni and sharing its strongly dramatic character.

Explore a profound exploration of human suffering, of hope, of joy and exultation. As the final Mystical Song has it “let all the world in every corner sing”.
