Nominations are open! Ngā Tohu Toi 2023

Ngā Tohu Toi Mo Ngā Uri Iwi o Te Rohe o Tauranga Moana will be held on the 13th July 2023 at Waikato University, Tauranga Campus. Last year was the inaugural event and Te Tuhi Mareikura Trust (TMT) are happy to announce that it will be back this year.

The prestigious awards night will acknowledge the depth of the artistic talent that whakapapa to Tauranga Moana. This year the nominations have opened up to whānau and community.

The nominations for Ngā Tohu Toi will be launched at the Tauranga Art Gallery on the 3rd April with sponsors and Tauranga Moana artists community. This night will also be an information evening about Te Tauranga Toi, a new online Māori marketplace.

TMT are excited to announce that they have confirmed the following sponsors to support their Tauranga Moana artists: Tauranga City Council, Waikato University, Toi Ohomai – Bachelor of Creative Industries, Creative Bay of Plenty, M Consulting Ltd, Art + Body Creative Studio, Ngāi Te Rangi and The Island Brewery. TMT appreciate the sponsors that have supported the inaugural awards and also the new sponsors that have come onboard.

The auspicious evening will be held on 13 July 2023 with refreshments and local entertainment to celebrate and recognise Māori who play a part in creating our regional identity
and who take this beyond our boundaries and in some cases, internationally. Ngā Tohu Toi Mo Nga Uri Iwi o Te Rohe o Tauranga Moana has been established by Te Tuhi Mareikura Trust, a collective that aims to champion Māori arts distinctive ongoing contribution to our regional identity.

“Te Tuhi Mareikura was set up in 2015 by a small group of Māori artists who wanted to raise the profile of iwi creatives and advance education opportunities in Māori arts. Our goal is to build strong, sustainable and enduring relationships with organisations, groups and individuals within the rohe of Tauranga Moana to ensure the continued advancement and
development of ngā toi māori – Māori arts, the wider creative community and art audiences,” says Julie Paama-Pengelly, Te Tuhi Mareikura Trust chairperson.
