Review: Jekyll & Hyde (The Musical) by Tauranga Musical Theatre

Creative Bay of Plenty headed along to the sponsors evening for Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical on Thursday. Showing now at Tauranga Musical Theatre, this is a gripping theatrical experience that brings to life the struggle between good and evil. Based on the classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson, this production features a thrilling score of pop rock hits from the talented duo of Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse, and has captivated audiences around the world.

One of the standout elements of this performance was the talent of lead actor Sam Howe (read his interview with us here), who portrayed Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde. Howe’s voice was stunning, displaying a wide range and impressive vocal control. His ability to seamlessly switch between the two characters, capturing their distinct personalities and emotions, was mesmerising.

Anna Hawkins (read her interview with us here), who played Lucy Harris, also deserves high praise for her powerful and pure vocal performance. Her emotional portrayal of Lucy was heart-wrenching and brought a great depth to the character. Emma Carew, who played Emma Twigley, displayed exceptional vocal control, a testament to her classical roots and dedication to her craft.

The ensemble cast also deserves commendation for their harmonies, and for bringing such flair to their individual roles and the group as a whole. The musical direction by Elise Rohde, direction by Laura Mansell, and choreography by Rachael Somerville were all top-notch, bringing their expertise together to create a cohesive and engaging production.

Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical is a must-see production that delivers a powerful theatrical experience. Bravo to the entire creative team for bringing this gothic tale to life with such talent and passion! Book your tickets here – showing now until 29 April 2023.
