Press release: Te Tuhi Mareikura Trust

Ambassador, Leader and Visionary Darcy Nicholas, musician Betty-Anne Monga, actor Mabel Wharekawa-Burt, and others announced as winners of Ngā Tohu Toi Awards in Tauranga Moana.

On the eve of our Matariki holiday on the 13th July, ten Māori creatives have been honoured and celebrated at the Ngā Tohu Toi Mo Ngā Uri Iwi o te Rohe o Tauranga Moana held at the University of Waikato.

With work spanning across disciplines as diverse as art education, leadership in visual arts, music and arts research, each received awards gifted with names associated with the region.

“Each award winner has led the way in sharing our pūrākau (stories) through transformational art experiences. They have made a significant contribution to our people, shaping our regional identity and taking this beyond our boundaries.” says Paama-Pengelly, Te Tuhi Mareikura Trust chairperson.

It is a special night to bring our recipients, their whānau and our community together to acknowledge the māhi these creatives have achieved over their lifetime thus far.

We were honoured to have Darcy Nicholas, Kereti Rautangata, Mabel Wharekawa-Burt, Betty- Anne Monga, Toby Mills, Terekaunuku Dean Flavell, and Jeanine Clarkin in attendance, along with their whānau and stakeholders at the awards.

We were treated to a special performance from Ngā Taipakeke o Tauranga Moana which represented Tauranga Moana at the recent Taikura Kapa Haka festival held at Te Papa in Wellington.
