You are cordially invited to be a part of an exciting new endeavour…
Papamoa Paranoia: A Suburban Supernatural Writers Room
The Mission:
A genre-focused writers room concentrating on short film scripts with supernatural themes.
The Ultimate Goal:
To produce a local 90 minute anthology feature film – Suburban Supernatural – showcasing various stories inspired by the ever-present suburban zeitgeist; we aim to produce six 15 minute films to make the 90 min feature.
We’re leaning toward ‘daylight horror’ – weird tales that take place in suburban settings during the quiet hours when most people are away at work. Some stories could possibly lean into sci fi, comedy, etc.
Besides conjuring our own tales from our over active imaginations, we could also look at basing material on local mysteries, myths, & legends.
We need skilled writers like your wonderful self to make this a success!
The Instigators:
Gary Davies: Award winning local filmmaker, writer director of short horror ‘Be Quiet’
Rob Morgenstern: International film producer at ‘Atara Film Ltd’, based in Tauranga
The Details:
The Writers Room is a 10 week program bringing together 8 – 12 participants from the BOP. We will meet at Atara Film Studio, 32 Devonport Road, every Thursday at 7:00 to 9:30pm, beginning Thursday 20 July.
NOTE: This is a participatory workshop, not a blueprint or a class – we’ll all be working together toward the final goal; think of great band documentaries eg. ‘Get Back’ where bandmates work and build on song ideas together… Let’s JAM on our story ideas and make them sing!
The Writers Room Goal for the end of the 10 weeks:
By the end of the sessions we will have developed six awesome short genre scripts that we will use to pursue funding for an anthology film to make in the region!
*Reference films & series to watch: ‘The Twilight Zone’, ‘Ghost Stories’ (2017), ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’, ‘V/H/S’ anthology film series, ‘Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre’, ‘Trick ’r Treat’ (2007)
