New public art for Tauranga’s Red Square

Font Public Art Trust is delighted to announce its first artist call-out. The Font public art collection will ignite and nourish the creative pulse of Tauranga city centre, creating a legacy of iconic landmark that ignite and nourish the city’s creative pulse. Font’s art collection will welcome, surprise and engage all visitors, progress New Zealand’s contemporary art practice, and enrich the experience of living in this gorgeous city by the sea.

Font is working with mana whenua, local government, the art sector and other partners to create a vibrant and culturally rich city, nurturing creativity, and inspiring younger generations. Working closely with Tauranga City Council’s City Development team, Red Square is identified as the site for the first project.

Red Square is rich in history as a gathering point for the many peoples of Tauranga, significant for its waterways connections and a place that has borne witness to many significant times. Font are looking to appoint an artist or artists to make new work for a mid 2024 launch, to create exciting and sensitive art that responds to Red Square’s history, to the geography, stories and peoples of Tauranga.

Expressions of Interest for this new artwork are now invited from artists. The deadline is midnight on 24 September 2023.
