Tauranga City Council is proud to announce a new public art project soon to get underway. In honour of the FIFA Women’s World Cup being held on our shores, Tauranga City Council are commissioning five murals that honour Tauranga tiahuia – women of prestige and talent.
Tauranga has a rich and dynamic history of women from all walks of life who exemplify excellence, courage, triumph and potential. By weaving the inspiring māreikura (superwomen) narratives of Tauranga wāhine, we will blaze a trail for women’s empowerment.
In the next couple of weeks, Tauranga City Council will be advertising for Expressions of Interest from artists to send in their concepts for mural designs that honour a tiahuia who has a strong connection to Tauranga. TCC will be looking for designs that will honour the chosen tiahuia, embody her spirit, and inspire the next generation of young women to dream big!
Keep your eyes peeled on Creative Bay of Plenty and The Big Idea for how to apply when the Expressions of Interest open.
This project has been generously funded by the Hine te Hiringa – Empower Women Utilising FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Fund.
