The Mātātuhi Foundation was set up by the Auckland Writers Festival in 2018 to support and promote the work of New Zealand writers and/or materially increase the levels of engagement and appreciation for New Zealand literature among New Zealand readers. To date the foundation has supported over 50 literary projects and distributed almost $220,000 in literary grants.
Each year individuals and organisations are offered two opportunities to secure a seed funding grant of up to $20,000. The second and final funding round for the year is now open. If you have an ambitious literary project that matches the foundation’s kaupapa, they welcome your submission.
Q: Will the Foundation support my personal writing projects?
Unfortunately, no. Creating and/or publishing individual titles or anthologies will not qualify for a funding grant unless there is deemed to be a significant community benefit to the NZ literary sector.
