Expressions of Interest: Public Art Panel

Tauranga City Council is seeking expressions of interest for panelists to sit on the newly reformed Public Art Panel.

Tauranga City Council has a bold and ambitious new city vision and strategic framework for public art, one which embraces partnership and recognises the role that art and artists play in creating thriving communities. The new Public Art Framework will support the commissioning, development, gifting, and maintenance of artworks which are located on Council-owned sites.

To support Tauranga City Council on the realisation of their vision, the Public Art Panel will be made up of industry-leading professionals who provide independent, professional assessment, advice, and recommendations to Tauranga City Council.

The role of the Public Art Panel:

  • Be an advocate and champion for Public Art in Tauranga.
  • Provide expert advice to Tauranga City Council on significant Public Art initiatives, at all stages of development and implementation.
  • Assess Public Art Proposals based on the Assessment Criteria, and identify areas for improvement early in the concept, design, and delivery process.
  • Make funding recommendations for internal and external projects to the Public Art Fund.
  • Participate in the development and annual review of the Public Art Master Plan priorities.
  • Provide Council officers with advice on commissioning processes and artist selection methods, consistent design advice, clear direction, and confidence in their delivery and reporting.
  • Make recommendations on current works which should be removed and/or re-sited.

Tauranga City Council is looking for applicants that have more than one of the following desired qualities:

  • Expertise and proven experience in commissioning, creating, or curating Public Art
  • Expertise and proven experience in commissioning, creating, or curating ngā toi Māori within public spheres
  • Sound knowledge of the history and/or landscape of Tauranga
  • Sound knowledge of the narratives of mana whenua
  • Expertise in urban design, architecture or landscape architecture
  • Expertise in arts management
  • Governance experience, particularly within an arts, culture, or heritage institution
  • Funding, sponsorship, and philanthropy experience, particularly involving arts, culture and heritage
  • Well-connected in the Bay of Plenty
