Applications closing soon for Rising Stars Competition

The Bay’s budding student musicians have only a short time left to submit their applications for Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s eighth biennial Rising Stars Competition.

The popular competition is designed to give 12 – 18 year old musicians from around the Bay of Plenty a platform to exhibit their talent, and to introduce them to the New Zealand public. Once again there are two classes: a concerto competition for instrumentalists and a composition competition.

Concerto finalists will perform with the orchestra in the Rising Stars concert on 27 August, the winner being selected on the night by a panel of professional, nationally recognised judges.  The winning composition will also be performed by the orchestra, among other items.

The deadline for participants to register for the competition is 5pm on Friday 3rd March, so it’s time to get those entry forms in!

Further details and entry forms are available from bopssecretary@gmail.com or on the orchestra’s website, www.bopsymphonia.org.nz.

BOP Symphonia have a policy of encouraging talented young musicians, and many who have played with the orchestra have gone on to successful tertiary study in performance. The biennial Rising Stars concerto competitions have been a popular part of the orchestra’s repertoire since 2009, and have given many secondary school level students from around the Bay the rare opportunity to perform with a live orchestra. The recent introduction of a composition class has led to some exciting new talent being recognised.
