About the orchestra
Bay of Plenty Symphonia Inc is a community orchestra based in Tauranga, in the beautiful Bay of Plenty. The orchestra presents 3-4 concert series a year and is made up of enthusiastic amateur musicians from around the region who enjoy its great community feel. Rehearsals are currently held weekly on Thursday evenings.

About the role
The ideal applicant will be forward thinking, encourage a great orchestral culture, whilst developing the orchestra further, promoting active and passive enjoyment of classical music and growing positive relationships with the community. The Musical Director will work alongside the Managing Committee to make sure the orchestra moves into a sustainable and exciting future.
The ideal applicant will have:
Qualifications/Experience:
- A tertiary education in music performance or equivalent
- Experience working in or with community orchestras or similar
- Relevant conducting experience
Skills:
- Conducting skills
- Ideally, arranging and typesetting skills
- In-depth knowledge of orchestral repertoire, orchestral instruments and orchestral processes
- Good communication skills
- Understanding of financial discipline and good governance
- Leadership and motivational skills; solid understanding of balancing the social and artistic challenges of a community orchestra

Interviews will be held after applications close at a time suitable for both parties, either in person in Tauranga or via video conference.
BOP Symphonia are looking to hold auditions in Tauranga in the form of an orchestral rehearsal, ideally on a Thursday evening in June, to be discussed with the applicant. Some flexibility may be possible.
Bay of Plenty Symphonia will consider making a contribution towards applicants’ travel and accommodation costs to attend an audition.
