Ramble on this weekend

The Taylor Bros Transport Ltd Sheds and Studios Ramble, on Saturday 29th April is a self-drive ramble through a collection of creative spaces each with their own distinctive character with locations dotted throughout Katikati and Waihi Beach.

On offer are impressive vehicles, interesting machinery, clever woodwork and stunning and quirky artwork plus lots more.

“It’s amazing what some blokes have hiding in their sheds and what artists conjure up in their studios,” says Kirst O’Rourke, Katch Katikati Events Manager. “The Ramble is a unique opportunity to have a nosey at all these treasures in our community.”

Katch Katikati, organisers of the event, have enlisted the help of Abbeyfield Western Bay of Plenty volunteers to man the gates on the day and ticket proceeds will go towards the establishment of an Abbeyfield House in Katikati.

Some of the sheds and studios include:

Brian Barton’s sheds include a woodturning space, another filled with wood and a gallery with his stunning hand-crafted bowls, plates and objects. Brian knows the story behind each piece of wood, what type it is and where it was sourced. He is encouraging of anyone who wants to use his shed to further their own wood-turning skills and some of the men who work in the space will be available to chat about their work on the day.

Barb Young’s studio is a converted boatshed situated on a beautiful beachfront Waihi Beach location where she creates batik paintings (made of melted wax on silk), crochet bags and baskets. Also on display is her husband Bill’s upcycled wooden art.

Krystal Lynn is a self-taught artist based in the harbourside village of Athenree. She works mainly in pen, creating detailed drawings of characterful birds, with a quirky twist. She finds inspiration in the wildlife around her, and her wild flower-filled garden. Krystal also enjoys painting floral still life, raranga (weaving with flax), textile painting, and has recently begun lino printing.

Sharnie’s  colourful Trinkets Gallery Studio in Matahui Road showcases all the intricate handmade upcycled treasures she makes from found objects destined for the rubbish bin. Come and see the amazing all the pretty things she creates out of old match boxes, sardine tins, coffee pods and game board pieces.

John Brown’s Shed is a treasure trove of old machinery parts he has collected over the years. Meander down his driveway lined with all sorts of old bits and pieces and down to his shed containing an old combustion engine!
