Amplify: A Creative and Cultural Strategy for New Zealand

Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Paul Goldsmith has announced that the Government’s new creative sector strategy, Amplify, aims to increase New Zealanders’ engagement with arts and culture and boost its economic impact.

Amplify has been released for public consultation and I encourage people to read the strategy and to share their feedback. There’s an opportunity to increase the impact of our arts and culture here and on the world stage, and significantly increase the sectors’ contribution to GDP and export revenue by 2030. Our creative and cultural sectors also face many common challenges, so Amplify uses the levers the Government has to help.”

The strategy outlines four main targets:

  1. Position Aotearoa New Zealand among the top 25 nations globally for cultural and heritage ‘soft power’.
  2. Bring the median income for creative professionals closer to the national median wage.
  3. Increase the arts and creative sector’s GDP contribution to at least $20 billion.
  4. Encourage greater public participation in Aotearoa New Zealand arts, culture, and heritage.

To reach these goals over the next six years, Amplify focuses on three key strategic pillars:

  1. Maximising the impact of the $450 million annual Crown investment in the sector.
  2. Developing talent and creating a sustainable career pipeline for creatives.
  3. Removing barriers to growth by modernising and streamlining government regulations to support the sector’s success.

Amplify is available on the Ministry for Culture and Heritage website.

You can read the strategy, take part in information sessions, submit feedback via an online consultation survey, and take part in one of three main centre consultation workshops. With the first information session on Friday 8 November, now’s the time to get reading, get thinking and get involved.
