Climate Canvas Comes to Carlton Gallery

Presented by: Envirohub
Carlton Gallery is proud to host the finalist exhibition for Climate Canvas, an art competition run by Envirohub BOP as part of the Climate Action Festival.
This year’s theme, Precious Resources, invited artists from Tauranga, the Western Bay of Plenty, and Rotorua to explore what we often take for granted, from water, soil, and air to the fabric we wear and throw away. The theme also celebrates resources that don’t always get noticed: community, time, biodiversity, and the knowledge passed down through generations, including mātauranga Māori and kaitiakitanga.
Ten finalists were selected from entries across the region, working in 2D and 3D on canvas or board. Their work was first shown at The Cargo Shed in Tauranga, where the community voted for their favourite piece in the People’s Choice award, alongside judged prizes for first, second, and third place.
Now it’s Katikati’s turn. From 05 October, Carlton Gallery will host the finalists’ work for four weeks, giving locals and visitors the chance to see this year’s Climate Canvas entries up close.
“Art is such a great way to express things that words can’t do alone,” says Te Ara Dirkse, Envirohub BOP Project Coordinator. “I started this competition to give people space to really voice how they feel about climate change. It’s such an intense subject, and so many of us feel downhearted about it. This comp gives people a way to communicate their feelings and get people thinking.”
