Kia ora, I’m Jamie Harkins, a multidisciplinary artist born in Tauranga in 1973 and based in Mount Maunganui, with over 30 years of making behind me.
My work spans fine art, public art, chalk pastels, acrylics, lightbox animation, short film and native timber carving, but I’m probably best known for my 3D anamorphic beach art. Using the sand at the Mount as my canvas, I create large-scale drawings that pop off the beach when viewed from just the right angle, then let the tide take them away.
What drives me is passing on creativity and encouraging free, out-of-the-box thinking. I want to spark new ideas that beautify the world, and I hope art can help people become more empathetic and build a brighter future together.
I hold a Bachelor of Media Arts and have tutored at Toi Ohomai. Teaching is a big part of what I do, from kids’ art classes and chalk pastel workshops to beach art sessions for all ages.
My beach art has been featured in the NZ Herald, My Modern Met and TwistedSifter, and has taken me overseas to the Arava Desert Art Symposium in Israel and Dubai Canvas in 2018. Commercial work includes cover art for Stab Magazine and campaigns for Lakes Mall.
I’m available for commissions, live beach art and event activations, workshops for schools, retirement villages and community groups, and collaborations.
