Candidates on Creativity

Christine Young

ACT (Tauranga)

We asked the Tauranga/Bay of Plenty candidates, in advance of the upcoming general election, what they value about the arts and creativity. Here’s what ACT’s Tauranga candidate Christine Young had to say.

What’s a creative thing you like to do in your spare time?

Tauranga has many wonderful opportunities to enjoy arts and indulge our creative streak. I like going to the Tauranga Art Gallery, going to shows at Baycourt, to local theatre performances, to local musicals and recitals. I’ve been eyeing up the local pottery studio recently as I was quite arty at school, mainly painting and drawing then.

What’s your favourite creative thing to do with your whānau or friends?

What I said above, plus going to museums when visiting cities with museums.

Why is it important for young people to have creativity in their lives?

Everyone should have creativity in their lives. It is about dreaming and imagining what is possible. It is about making, creativity and being free. Those who have lived in countries with government censorship will know that no one can control our minds. Young people have wonderful imaginary minds, story-telling all the time. They are bursting with creativity through art, music, performance. It is a natural part of young people’s lives.

Why does creativity and culture matter to Aotearoa New Zealand?

It is about being part of a community. We live in and amongst a rich multi-ethnic country with a strong indigenous culture, so full of art, beauty and love. It is about connecting with others, sharing and finding common ground. Celebrating our ancestors and appreciating our shared humanity.

If you were Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, what’s the first thing you would do?

I would need to dive deeper into the policies and funding and explore what we have and what we still need for arts, culture and heritage to thrive.

If you were made Minister, would the government’s investment for creativity go up or down?

Most Ministers want more and the best for their portfolios. As Minister, I’d consider all applications and after reconciling the current budget and allocating funds, I would encourage engagement with donors, sponsors and patrons to further support more projects.
