The Day That Never Was

Sep 21 @ 3:00 pm
Free – $25

Presented by: Tauranga Civic Choir

We invite you to step beyond the ordinary and join us for a concert where time blurs and imagination soars; through dawn’s promise, daylight’s wonder, and the mysteries of night;  where clocks don’t tick and only melody marks the passing of time –  a day imagined but never lived.

The day begins with the simple clarity of Gregorian chant, then stretches into morning sunshine with excerpts from Haydn’s Creation, Mozart’s Magic Flute, and Morning Hymn from The Sound of Music.   By afternoon, things get delightfully quirky. Frank Bridge’s The Bee buzzes in with energy, followed by Animal Crackers—Eric Whitacre’s cheeky settings of Ogden Nash’s short nonsense poems. Whitacre once said, “I dreamed of writing something with the depth of Monteverdi and the timelessness of Brahms. I wrote this instead.”  (We think we’re glad he did, though they have been rather a challenge!)   As evening falls, the mood softens  with the gentle lull of Whitacre’s Seal Lullaby, Lauridsen’s Nocturnes, and Rheinberger’s tender Abendlied.

The programme also includes some small group items, and some surprise guest soloists.

From sunrise to sunset—with a dash of afternoon tea—this concert has something for every musical appetite.

For this concert we are privileged to have William McElwee from Wellington as our guest Musical Director.  William is a talented conductor, composer, soloist, organist and accompanist. He is Director of Music at St. Mary of the Angels, Wellington, where he leads the choir and deputises as an organist and pianist. He also currently directs the Bay of Plenty Symphonia in Tauranga.   As a singer, he has appeared as a soloist with Days Bay Opera, Eternity Opera, numerous choirs in the Wellington Region, and the New Zealand Opera Chorus.
