The Importance of Being Earnest is a delightfully absurd comedy of manners by Oscar Wilde, where two charming bachelors, Jack and Algernon, invent fake identities to escape societal obligations and woo their loves, Gwendolen and Cecily. Both women, however, are oddly fixated on marrying men named “Earnest,” leading to a cascade of lies, misunderstandings, and hilariously over-the-top declarations of love. Add in a formidable Lady Bracknell, a misplaced handbag, and a surprise twist about Jack’s origins, and you’ve got a sharp, witty satire of Victorian society that proves sincerity is overrated—especially when everyone’s busy being “earnest”.
