Tūmanako was originally initiated nine years ago by the Mayor of Wellington and Soka Gakkai International New Zealand to commemorate Hiroshima Day on 6 August. Tūmanako/Hope has since run every year and is growing across Aotearoa. This is the 3rd year Tūmanako has been held in Tauranga.
Our vision for this exhibition is to create a space where children and young people are empowered to express their own hopes and aspirations for a peaceful world. It provides an opportunity to gather together, think about, and promote peace. Also, Tūmanako enables children and young people to reflect on current events in the world, to learn about the harm of nuclear weapons, of New Zealand’s own proud nuclear free history, and the root causes of violence in general.
This year’s theme is based on a whakataukī: Kotahi te kākano whakaaro, he nui ngā hua o te rākau houhou rongo – One seed of thought grows the forest of peace.
Age group: From 5 years to 18 years.
