Wairua brings together the practices of Maraea Timutimu and Tania Lewis-Rickard through an exploration of kōkōwai as a shared medium.
This exhibition creates a space for experimentation, allowing each artist to work with the material in ways that reflect their own practice, ideas and ways of making.
Kōkōwai becomes the point of connection between two artists, while allowing difference to remain. Through the addition of wai, the material shifts, moves and responds, creating new possibilities.
In Tauranga Moana, where whenua and wai continually meet, Wairua explores what can emerge when two practices come together—sharing a material, while remaining distinctly our own.
