At the end of 2019 a group of Tauranga based artists taking the Otago Diploma of Ceramics through Waikato Potters Society, gained space at the bottom of Devonport Road to hold a one month pop-up gallery of their work.
In tandem, space was used to offer 2 hour, hand building, pottery workshops. The workshops showed potential and I decided to continue with them.
I developed the concept using slab and formers to gain the basic shape, then adding, shaping, modifying and combining.
To enable the full create within 2 hours, hair dryers are used to force the clay to leatherhard, the formers removed and underglaze applied.
With a full create occuring in the 2 hours, the studio has become popular with group events and celebrations as well as individuals looking for a creative outlet. The studio dries, clear glazes and once fires the creations.
Midfired stoneware is used making the items food safe and permanent.
The challenge has been to design and find a stimulating selection of possibilities for first timers to pottery to make.
I have been joined in the studio with some very talented potters but the focus remains on entertainment.
