Born in Tauranga, 1950, I grew up in Morrinsville drawing and painting from a very young age. During the late 50’s and early 60’s I attended traditional oil painting classes with Violet Watson. This was the spark that would guide me throughout my career and life.

After finishing education at Morrinsville College and King’s College Auckland, I completed a 3-year apprenticeship as a Commercial Artist with a Hamilton advertising agency, also completing a Post-Graduate Diploma in Commercial Art, majoring in illustration. I progressed through the junior ranks to more senior Art Director / Creative Director roles. This included a graduate internship position in the art and copy department of Magazine House, a division of Kenmure Press in Sydney, Australia.

A demanding 17-year career path continued in the highly competitive advertising industry working for numerous New Zealand & Australian advertising agencies, newspapers, commercial printing companies and retail promotional groups, before establishing my own Hamilton based Graphic Design Consultancy Lancer Graphics in 1983.

Having sold after 10 years in business, an extended ‘freelance’ travel-break and a return to a commercial life, several senior  Creative Director roles followed… before moving into the new media industry as Creative Group Head for Nationwide internet business leaders Web-Masters/Advantage Group.

I returned to Tauranga in 2000 to establish and co-ordinate the new National Certificate in Design & Diploma programmes at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. I tutored and lectured in design and illustration, plus undertaking further Post-Graduate studies. An accumulation of over 45-years of continuous creative industry involvement.

Throughout my life I have continued to design, draw and paint. Many award-winning commercial projects and various private commissions are held in public and private hands, both in New Zealand and Australia.

In retirement, I continue to work on private commissions plus a return to a love of sculpture rekindled with clay. My recent project was to complete my first book ‘Claytime Impressions’, a gallery of contemporary work.
