Now, picture this. Owner, Nic Clegg, as ‘Nicholas Charles Photography’ describes how he created ‘The Light Lab’.

‘The Light Lab’, Community Photography Studio is a project developed in collaboration with the Incubator Creative Hub. It is managed and funded by myself, but comes under The Incubator umbrella. Offering affordable studio and equipment hire to photographers and other digital creatives – this exciting new venture provides a resource for anyone keen to explore photography. From students, right through to professional photographers. I offer short photography courses and workshops to individuals and to groups in a relaxed, safe and fun-filled environment. I have many years of arts education experience in design and sculpture, and I am presently teaching photography at Toi Ohomai.

After more than 30 years working in creative industries as a designer & sculptor, I came back to one of my early passions- photography. This was 6 or so years ago and after experimenting with different photographic genres, I concluded that at my core I am a ‘people person’ so now, I shoot people! I operate out of the Light Lab, but not exclusively and can meet your needs as required & come to you.

Be it a corporate head shot, a fashion & beauty shoot, a family or business event shoot, the key to success is the ability to communicate effectively with your subject. It’s important to form a relationship with your client. My approach to photographing people involves capturing an interaction and a communication which leads to a relationship with the subject and the viewer of the image.

Photography basically is the capture of light recorded by the camera. Through the use of flash and constant lights I have the skills and equipment to manipulate light for greater creative effect. Not just in the studio, but on location too with the portable equipment I employ.

I chose to locate my business in the historic Village, not just to develop a studio space but because the Village itself offers great locations for outdoor shoots. The place offers so much versatility as a set!
