We teamed up with The Breeze Tauranga to conduct Paint My Portrait: a project where an artist was selected to paint a portrait of an individual whose photo was submitted by a member of our community.
We put out a call out for our artists, who were then narrowed down to 3 finalists by a panel. The public then voted for their favourite artist, and Michelle Estall was chosen.
The public then submitted photos of a special person in their life that thought deserved to be immortalised in paint. The entries were narrowed down to 3 photos, and were again put to a public vote.
Once we had our artist, and our winning photo, the painting began. We unveiled the portrait Michelle painted of Erueti Tahere (submitted by Geraldine Kuruukanga) on-air to Erueti’s whanau. It was a very moving moment, and the painting was donated to the family that day.
This project was a paid opportunity for our artist, and also helped to gain them exposure and nation-wide profiling. It also involved members of our community, which gave it a personal feel. We were very grateful for this collaboration with The Breeze Tauranga, and look forward to similar projects in the future.
