Pou Matauranga Māori: Western Bay Museum

Western Bay Museum have an exciting and pivotal role available as their Pou Matauranga Māori.

In this role, you will connect Western Bay Museum to Te Ao Māori, lead iwi and hapū engagement, and provide an active and effective voice on kaupapa Māori associated with the Museum and its stakeholders. You will support your colleagues to understand and embrace Te Ao Māori and provide cultural advice as required for their respective areas of work.

Western Bay Museum are proud of the valued relationships they have built with mana whenua, and you will be required to build on these relationships in a meaningful and sustained manner. This is particularly important as the Museum embarks on significant refurbishment plans which have been co-designed with the three local hapū. Site work is scheduled to begin in mid-2025 or as soon as funding allows, and it is important that the community is brought along on this exciting journey.

The role also provides the opportunity to improve capability and confidence for effective and valued engagement with hapū, communities, local and central government, stakeholders, partners and visitors. This is across all levels of the organisation including governance, management, paid staff members, and volunteers.

To be successful in this role, it is expected that you will have advanced knowledge in Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori, a supportive approach, high energy levels, confidence in public speaking, and be a team player. Knowledge of the Code of Ethics of Museums Aotearoa is desirable, but not essential.
