Multicultural Tauranga is a charitable, non-profit, non-political, non-religious community organisation and a registered charity. We are run by a committed group of volunteers who share the desire to promote and protect the interests of various groups which make up New Zealand’s multicultural society.

Our organisation was founded in 1994 as Bay of Plenty Ethnic Council. Over the years it has grown and widened the scope of its activities.

Multicultural Tauranga is one of 20 Regional Multicultural Councils throughout New Zealand. There are also national councils for women, youth, seniors and business, which all come under the umbrella of the New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils, or Multicultural New Zealand. Its primary role is to promote, support and share information among the Regional Councils. Located in Wellington the Federation is also well placed to lobby the interests of migrants and refugees at various political levels.

We offer settlement support services and organise a number of multicultural community events.

Permanent and long-term migration into Tauranga continues to rise. There were 2,594 arrivals in Tauranga in 2017 from countries around the world, according to the latest permanent and long-term migration data released by Statistics New Zealand. This is 193 more people than the year before and 351 more than in 2015.

The latest (2013) census shows that 19.7% of people living in Tauranga were born overseas – one in five people. This figure includes a rapidly growing number of newcomers from Asia and the Pacific Islands.
