I have been painting and drawing for much of my 76 years, alternating between careers in art and newspaper journalism around New Zealand. I had initial experience in illustration and design in Wellington after leaving school.

I strive to capture the spirit and character of New Zealand’s landforms, vistas, colours and harmonic interaction between the Creator and the created in a way that ordinary people, especially country folk, can relate to in an inspirational, representational style – perhaps like I play the trumpet or trombone.

I have completed hundreds of private commissions for clients throughout NZ and overseas, including illustrating six books on historic and rural subjects and have exhibited widely, including at country shows, rural events and solo and private exhibitions. Now resident in Papamoa with my own studio, I have conducted workshops for several art societies and am a multiple award-winner at Tauranga Society of Artists’competitions.

Paeroa-born, I have lived in Hawera, Blenheim, Mount Maunganui, Christchurch and Cambodia, returning to Papamoa in 2014 from Christchurch post-earthquake repairs. I have exhibited widely around New Zealand, often at rural events such as A&P shows, combining displays with painting demonstrations, and conducting workshops for several art societies. My works in acrylics, oils, pen and ink and watercolour reflect versatility in handling a variety of mediums and styles to suit the subject and clients’ preferences. All my work is produced using my own photos and sketches done on location, and I enjoy working en plein air when possible to study subjects in detail and to capture the atmosphere and best light.

In semi-retirement mode, I enjoy the camaraderie and interaction with other artists, always seeking to learn new techniques and encouraging others to build up their confidence and skills.

I am available for private commissions or live painting demonstrations, and visitors to my studio in Romana Crescent are welcome by appointment.
