Artistic Practice & Background
Educated at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art (Diploma of Fine Arts), Shane emerged during a formative era in Aotearoa’s contemporary art scene, establishing a practice rooted in identity politics, visual advocacy, and community dialogue. His early career was marked by pioneering queer curatorial and exhibition-making initiatives, including coordinating the landmark I AM / KO AHAU: Lesbian and Gay Identity in Art at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery (1992) and curating the Lesbian and Gay Pride Week Exhibition at Solutions Gallery (1993).
His work has been exhibited widely across New Zealand (Hero Art Exhibition, Southern Man Exhibition, Not A Painting) and gained international acclaim through his inclusion in Graphic Advocacy: International Posters for the Digital Age. Curated by Elizabeth Resnick, this major traveling exhibition toured prestigious United States institutions, including the Pratt Institute (New York) and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (Boston), cementing Shane’s reputation within the global sphere of socially engaged design and visual activism.
Today, based in the Bay of Plenty, his interdisciplinary practice seamlessly bridges the worlds of fine art and commercial design—utilising visual communication as a powerful tool for cultural expression, business growth, and social impact.
